Ash Wednesday: Never relent in Praying for Nigeria – Bishop Onaga

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga has called on Catholics and Christians in Nigeria to never relent in praying for Nigeria. His Lordship spoke at the backdrop of the increasing insecurity in the country as well as the heinous persecution Christians have faced in the country.

Speaking at the commencement of  the Prayer Protest organized on Ash Wednesday as directed by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, His Lordship reaffirmed the symbolic level of the protest urged Christians to  keep praying for the security of the country at all times.

He further urged for fervent prayer for the leadership of the country so that they will wake up to their responsibility at all time.

“This is symbolic.  We are expected to be praying for the security of this country every time as Catholics and as Christians.  We are asking God to help reawaken those whose responsibility is to ensure peace and harmony among Nigerians so that things will be as it has always been in Nigeria.

“We are praying that God will help us and then console those who might have lost loved ones as a result of all kinds of evil and insecurity in the country.

“We as Catholics also ask for the intervention of our Mother Mary. We have to be persistent in our prayer so that peace will return to this country”, His Lordship said.

Meanwhile the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in her Ash Wednesday message expressed regret in the turn of things in the country.

They however expressed hope that the future will be better but however called on Christians to intensive in their witnessing and life of prayer while also calling on government to wake up to her responsibility and nip to the bud the many challenges bedeviling the collective growth of the country.
